Traveling the Greek Islands by Sailboat

There are many ways to get from point A to point B, but the most common (and generally fastest) is by airplane.  However, this isn’t necessarily the best way.  In fact, if you plan to visit an island chain, you will be much better served to go by boat.  And if your destination is the Green Islands, sailboat is the premiere method of transportation.  While you can certainly island-hop by air, do you really want to spend half of your vacation trapped in airports, shuffling through long lines and security checkpoints when you could be lounging on the sun-drenched deck of a gently swaying sailboat?  Honestly, which option sounds better?  Instead of suffering the hurry-up-and-wait mentality of modern air travel, embrace the relaxing attitude of the Greek Islands with a boat tour.  Here are just a few reasons to get aboard and set sail.

1.  Enjoy gorgeous scenery.  The waters of the Mediterranean are some of the most beautiful on the planet, and you’ll get an eyeful as you go island hopping.  You’ll have the opportunity to see the Greek Isles from a vantage point that few tourists and world travelers ever experience (since most of them see it from the air or the ground).

2.  Plenty of ports.  Many of the places you want to visit are going to be port cities (that’s where the beaches are, after all), so you’ll have a lot of options when it comes to putting in for the night or for a few days of island exploration.  The best part is, if you want to visit a city on the other side of the island, you don’t have to rent transportation; you can simply sail around to the other side, totally avoiding traffic delays.

3.   Built-in lodgings.  One of the most difficult parts of any vacation plan is determining where you’re going to stay while visiting a foreign country.  It can be difficult to find suitable lodgings within your price range.  But if you have a sailboat, you’ll have a free room no matter where you go for the duration of your trip.  Further, if you decide to pick up and move, you won’t have to worry about cancellation fees or changing your bookings.  You’ll have the freedom to move around as you please.

4.  Solitude vs. companionship.  Urban and rural areas have a very different appeal.  And while most people go on vacation in order to escape the hustle and bustle of the modern world, still there are times when it’s nice to experience the culture and people of a place, not to mention good food and the chance for a hot bath and a real bed.  So whether you’re looking to create a fortress of solitude on board your sailboat or you’d rather interact with the locals, you can have your cake and eat it, too, with this form of travel.

5.  Get to places planes can’t go.  Not every island in the Greek Isles is accessible by plane and only a handful are actually inhabited.  So by taking a boat tour of the area, you have the ability to explore islands that are literally empty of human life, meaning you can actually find your own private beach for a little while (at no additional cost).
